Screeners Pat-Down of 4 Year-Old Girl at Kansas Airport Defended.

A four-year old girl was recently passing through security at the Wichita, Kansas airport with her grandmother, Lori Croft, and her mother, Michelle Brademeyer, and became hysterical when she was forced to undergo a pat-down by security agents.  The girl and her mother had already initially passed through security without incident. When the little girl ran back to briefly hug Croft, however, who was awaiting a pat-down after tripping the alarm, Transportation Security Administration agents insisted the girl also undergo a physical pat-down.  The girl became frightened and began to cry and run away. The TSA agents then ordered the mother to grab her daughter or said that they would shut down the airport.

The girl’s family claims that the TSA agents treated the four-year old “no better than if she had been a terrorist” and filed formal complaints against the TSA and the airport.  The family argues that the TSA acted without common sense or compassion, and that they did not carry out security procedures in an appropriate manner.

The TSA nevertheless released a statement defending its agents, despite the existence of new procedures aimed at reducing pat-downs of children. The TSA released a statement claiming that they reviewed the incident and concluded that the agents followed proper procedures in conducting a modified pat-down on the child. In addition, the agency announced that it recently implemented modified screening procedures for children aged 12 or younger, which has reduced the need for future pat-downs.
